Star parties of summer 2018

Humanity’s fascination with celestial bodies dates back millennia.

And times have not changed.

Star parties and night sky events are held in our parks every summer, especially in northern Ontario where there is less light pollution.

Our 2018 Summer Stargazing Events:

Most of the programs and events below are weather dependent and may be postponed or canceled due to rain or cloud cover.

Killarney Provincial Park: Resident Astronomer, Stars over Killarney

Tuesday, July 3 – August 28

Killarney Observatory

Every Tuesday all summer long, you can join a resident astronomer at the park’s observatory for a chance to get a close-up view of Jupiter, Saturn, and some of the darkest celestial bodies in the night sky.

Killarney is currently the only provincial park with a high-powered telescope and you won’t want to miss it!

Dark Sky Reserve Badge

We’re hosting a special event called Stars over Killarney to celebrate Killarney becoming Ontario Parks’ first official dark sky reserve!

Join us to see the stars through our new high-powered telescope and learn about the night sky from resident astronomers.

Reserve a campsite (they fill up fast!) and take the family for what is sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

René Brunelle Provincial Park: Walk-in Visit to Discover the Night Sky

August 3, 2018 — 6:00 pm

Don’t forget to look up when the sun sets! Stop by the Night Sky Discovery Drop-In at the comfort station. Bring your flashlight and get ready to explore, observe and discover the mysterious night sky.

For more information, please go to the Visitor Center when you arrive at the park or contact us before you come.

Restoule Provincial Park: Astronomy Weekend

August 3 to 5, 2018

Hosted by members of the North Bay Astronomy Club, there will be laser-guided aerial tours of the main beach on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, with guest speakers on Friday and Saturday evenings.

There will also be solar observation on Saturdays and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the main beach.

All activities are weather permitting.

Lake Superior Provincial Park – Dark Sky Weekend

August 3 to 5, 2018

In partnership with Algoma Astronomers, Lake Superior will host numerous dark sky events throughout the weekend. Events will be held at the Agawa Bay Campground Visitor Center and beach.

Quetico Provincial Park — Astronomy Weekend

August 11-13, 2018

Presentations from the Thunder Bay Chapter of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada will take place over the weekend, along with telescope observations of the planets and the Perseid meteor shower, and a solar telescope observation in the afternoon .

Kettle Lakes Provincial Park: Starry Night Event

August 17, 2018 — 8:00 p.m.

Join us for our Starry Night event in the amphitheater for an evening among the stars! Come explore the mysteries of the night sky, discover new constellations and share their stories.

Bring a chair and roast marshmallows for the full campfire experience with the family!

Kakabeka Falls Provincial Park: Night Sky Program

August 18, 2018 — 7:00 p.m.

Join the Discovery Rangers at the Visitor Center for an exciting Night Sky program.

The Night Sky program is a Discovery drop-in event where guests stop by and interact with our Discovery Rangers who encourage a self-directed learning adventure. Visitors can make star maps, play the night sky matching game, and learn some fun facts.

Port Burwell Provincial Park: Astronomer in the Park

August 17-19, 2018

Astronomer Francois Van Heerden returns to the park to host a skywatching session on Friday at 9:00 p.m. On Saturday, Francois will invite park visitors to a presentation in the amphitheater at 8:15 p.m., followed by a sky tour of the moon, visible planets, and deep sky objects (weather permitting). .

Emily Provincial Park: Stargazing with the PAA

August 24, 2018 — 9:00 p.m.

Join us for stargazing with the Peterborough Astronomical Association as they set up various telescopes to help us explore the stars. Bring your curiosity about the night sky and your questions!

Driving? Park at Park Store and follow signs to Picnic Shelter #1. If it is too cloudy or rainy, the event will be postponed until Saturday.

Halfway Lake Provincial Park – Star Party; the middle of the night

August 23-26, 2018

Come to the Visitor Center upon arrival for details on our midnight star party!
