As part of Ontario Parks’ 125th anniversary, we are asking Ontarians to help us fund five legacy projects throughout the province.
The Bronte Creek Provincial Park project is…
…the construction of the first cricket field in the provincial park system!
Why is a cricket pitch a suitable “cover” idea?
We wanted to commemorate Ontario Parks’ 125th anniversary with an exciting new facility for our visitors, and cricket fit the bill!
Bronte Creek Provincial Park has been a popular picnic destination since 1975, attracting visitors from Toronto, Hamilton and Milton and everywhere in between.
Because it is so close to Toronto and the GTA (located just north of the QEW between Oakville and Burlington), Bronte Creek offers the “first provincial park” experience for many Ontarians.
In the spirit of Healthy Parks Healthy People, Bronte Creek wants visitors to get active outdoors. The park offers 8 miles of nature trails and bike paths, a huge outdoor pool, outdoor play equipment, and a famous disc golf course.
And on any given summer weekend, you’re likely to find a group of hikers playing cricket. So we thought…let’s make a proper speech!
Cricket is the fastest growing sport in Canada, with over 40,000 cricket players! In fact, in the early 19th century, cricket was more popular among Canadians than *GASP* hockey! Sir John A MacDonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister, even declared it our national sport (!), however he was soon overshadowed by baseball and hockey.
Actually, cricket also links well with the Victorian Bronte Creek farm, as cricket was first played in Britain around 400 years ago.
New to cricket?
It is said that once you learn to play, you won’t want to stop.
Are you just starting? All you need is a ball, a bat and a wicket (and some fellow cricketers!). You can get more sophisticated gear and equipment once you’ve caught the “bug.”
No matter your fitness level or skill level, it’s a game for everyone and we really hope to have the opportunity to bring the sport to Bronte Creek.
